It was not explained when I went in and I still felt like I needed to tip and did. It really turned me off when I went to both Watercourse and Jelly. But what will really twist your melon is the bill: that $20.40 (if you did the math) is suddenly $22.03.
So yeah, City O City deliberately shows you a $17 entree price and then hopes you feel better, psychologically, than if you saw their “actual” price of $20.40. And remember: it would be cheaper to administer if businesses included sales taxes in the posted prices. Foreigners visiting the USA are frequently horrified by how dishonest businesses are, hiding the final price of their goods. But almost every business uses price uncertainty-they hide sales tax at almost every business except hot dog vendors (when they say the dog is $2.50, you can give them $2.50). Yes, they coulda banned tipping entirely and just raised prices by 20%, but businesses will only do the right thing every time when they are compelled by force of law.ĮDIT: Additional thought about price uncertainty: no honest business would use this practice. So yeah, they hide fees, which is a form of something called "price confusion": a practice used to blur pricing so customers make poor, uninformed choices about how much they spend. Just because they're a lefty-friendly vibe doesn't mean they aren't a business. It's not virtue signaling: it's what businesses do. Remember theyre still capitalists and it’s not your servers fault bring cash for your servers who are still struggling to make ends meet.
Instead of paying the workers they should, the owners are buying homes and trying to open more restaurants. This is why most servers working are asking for cash straight up now. If I get an additional 100$ tip, I will see about $15 of that dependent on how many staff are on the clock at that time. I never have had to deal with this before but it directly affects me. It should be the owners who pay their workers more, not the workers job to supplement the wages of BOH. I love my job there but I do think it’s shitty that servers are splitting what small additional tips we get with BOH to ensure they get a living wage. Additional “gratuity” is split between FOH and BOH (60/40) and only cash goes directly to your specific server. The service fee goes to everyone from management to prep and dishwashers. It’s a newer spot that does a $50/person 5 course Sunday dinner and it’s incredible food! Other than those places, there’s plenty of Thai, pho, Indian, Ethiopian, and ramen joints in Denver that have plenty of vegan options! It’s getting better, even in the 5 years I’ve been here, but we still have a long way to go to being as friendly as the west coast is to plantbased diets.Įdit: another commenter mentioned somebody people, which totally slipped my mind. Voodoo Donuts has a ton of vegan options, which is a lifesaver if you’re looking for a quick treat in the city! Sputnik is another veggie-vegan spot, but it’s primarily a bar and the food isn’t winning any awards. Meta Burger is amazing junk food, where Root Down is a little classier a la Watercourse. Root Down and Meta Burger would be good choices, and I think we have a Native Foods chain or two. Other than those, there isn’t a ton (and City isn’t even totally vegan…).
